8-1 Discussion The Legacies of the Civil War

Q During and after Reconstruction, Americans began to reassess the Civil War. In this discussion, trace the evolution of northerners' perspectives on the Civil War over the 150 years following the war, or trace the evolution of southerners' perspectives on the Civil War. How has your side chosen to memorialize and commemorate the war over time? For your response posts, engage with classmates who traced the evolution of the other side's perspectives. In what way(s) is the other side historically correct and incorrect? Be sure to approach this from a historical perspective and not from modern political or ideological perspectives.

The Civil War deepened the divide between the Northern and Southern side. The Northern side was against slavery and wanted to eradicate this institution completely from the country. However, on the contrary, the Southerners wanted to safeguard the institution of slavery because of various economic reasons and it felt that this was an attempt by the North to levy taxes. They accepted the slavery culture as a part of their lives. In this discussion I would like to discuss the northerners’ perspectives on the Civil War. They wanted to fight for this eradication to make a place for America in the world. They wanted the Southerners to free themselves from the clutches of slavery and bondage[1].
